PayPal’s Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments

Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments is a payment solution provided by PayPal that gives your customers another way to pay. They’ll have the option at checkout to either enter their card details directly into your shop’s checkout page or log in and pay with a PayPal or Venmo (for U.S. domestic orders).

Benefits of PayPal’s Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments:

  • Seamless checkout experience: Customers can securely complete their card payment onsite without leaving your store's checkout page.
  • Customer satisfaction: Giving customers the option to pay with a card or with a PayPal account offers more flexibility and allows them to pay with their preferred payment method.
  • Increased sales: Offering more ways to pay can reduce cart abandonments and increase checkout conversions in your shop.
Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments is not available in all locations and feature eligibility is subject to PayPal’s approval.

Getting started

When connecting a PayPal Business account to your Big Cartel store, you’ll automatically apply for approval to use this feature. PayPal will notify us afterwards if your application was approved or denied, and we’ll display that status in your admin.

How to Connect PayPal’s Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payment Option

  1. Head to the Shop settings area of your Big Cartel admin.
  2. Click Connect PayPal
  3. Either log into an existing PayPal Business account or create a new one
  4. Follow the onscreen instructions to provide PayPal with information about you and your business
  5. Click “Return to Big Cartel” to complete the connection.
  6. Once you’ve completed PayPal’s onboarding experience you’ll return to Big Cartel where your Advanced Credit and Debit Card application status is displayed.

Seller Protection

PayPal's Advanced Credit and Debit Card option doesn’t include Seller Protection, which could put you at risk for chargeback fees.

To help reduce this risk, PayPal offers a separate opt-in service called Chargeback Protection, available within your PayPal Business account under Manage Risk and Fraud in your Payment Preferences.

How it works:

  • PayPal reviews all Advanced Credit and Debit Card transactions and can decline potentially fraudulent payments.
  • If a transaction is approved but later results in a fraud-related chargeback, PayPal will cover the chargeback once you provide the required details (or automatically if using the effortless option).

Costs:

  • Standard Chargeback Protection: +0.4% per ACDC transaction
  • Effortless Chargeback Protection: +0.6% per ACDC transaction
  • With this option, you don’t need to submit evidence for fraud-related chargebacks—PayPal handles it for you.

Application denied status

If you see a message in your Big Cartel admin stating that you weren't approved for PayPal's Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments feature, no worries. Even if you are not approved to accept card payments via PayPal, your customers can still complete purchases using their PayPal account or PayPal's guest checkout option.

Advanced Credit and Debit Card payments is for sellers that solely use PayPal as a checkout option. If you enable Stripe as a checkout method to process card payments, then PayPal’s Advanced Credit and Debit Card processing will not be available.

Next steps if your application is denied

PayPal may deny your application for a variety of reasons, including risk assessment or incomplete/inaccurate application information. Big Cartel will display your application’s status, but we do not have specific details as to why your application was denied and we do not play a role in application assessments for feature eligibility. If your application was denied, you can reapply for the Advanced Credit and Debit Card Payments feature after 90 days. This period allows you time to address any potential issues that led to the denial of your initial application. PayPal should communicate with you directly regarding any account issues and we encourage you to contact their support team if you have any other questions about your application.
