Offline or Connection Issues for In-person Payments

If you're having trouble using the Big Cartel mobile app due to a weak or lost internet connection, don’t worry — there are still ways to keep selling and get things back on track quickly.

This guide covers:

  • What happens when you’re offline
  • How payments work without a connection
  • Steps to fix connection issues
  • Tips to stay prepared when selling in person

What happens if you lose connection?

The Big Cartel app requires an internet connection for most actions, including:

  • Processing card payments
  • Syncing orders and inventory
  • Loading your product catalog

If your connection drops, you may notice:

  • Payments failing or not processing
  • Products not loading
  • Orders not appearing in real time

Can I take payments offline?

Card payments

Card payments (tap, chip, swipe, or manual entry) require an active internet connection to process through Stripe.

If you’re offline, card payments won’t go through.

Cash payments

You can still accept cash payments while offline.

Once your connection is restored, you can:

  • Manually create the order in the app
  • Mark it as paid with cash

How to fix connection issues

If you’re running into problems, try the following:

1. Check your internet connection

  • Make sure you’re connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data
  • Try switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see if one is more stable

2. Move to a stronger signal area

  • Large events, markets, or indoor venues can impact connectivity
  • Try moving closer to a router or outside for better signal

3. Toggle airplane mode

  • Turn airplane mode on, wait a few seconds, then turn it off
  • This can help reset your connection

4. Restart the app

  • Close the app completely
  • Reopen it and try again

5. Restart your device

  • Power your phone off and back on
  • This can resolve temporary network issues

6. Check for app updates

  • Make sure you’re using the latest version of the Big Cartel app

Tips for selling in low-connectivity areas

If you’re planning to sell at a market, pop-up, or event:

  • Test your connection ahead of time
  • Bring a backup payment option (like cash)
  • Consider a mobile hotspot if Wi-Fi is unreliable
  • Keep a simple order log (notes app or notebook) just in case
