PayPal: Disabled charges

If you’re seeing an error in your Big Cartel admin that your PayPal account can’t currently accept payments—don’t worry. This usually points to something simple on the PayPal side. Below are the most common reasons and how to fix them.

Step 1: Check for Unfulfilled PayPal Account Requirements

PayPal requires a few things to enable Commerce checkout. Double-check the following:

  • Check your primary PayPal email to be sure your account is confirmed.
  • Make sure your PayPal account is a business account.
  • Check that your account is verified here.
  • Check for any additional requirements in your PayPal admin. Log in to your PayPal account and then click the Summary tab or bell icon in the top right corner of your dashboard to make sure all verification tasks are complete.

Step 2: Make Sure Your Currencies Match

A currency mismatch between your Big Cartel store and your PayPal account can block payments.

In Big Cartel:

In PayPal:

  • Go to Money to view currency.

Step 3: Check for Blocked Payment Settings

Your PayPal account might be blocking certain types of payments.

  • Log in to PayPal.
  • Go to Account Settings.
  • Under Payment Preferences, click Update next to Block Payments.
  • Adjust your settings if needed.

Still Seeing the Error?

Sometimes it takes a bit for PayPal’s updates to reflect in your Big Cartel admin. You can speed things up by:

This refresh often triggers the update needed to restore payments.

If you've sorted everything on PayPal's end, but you're still seeing the yellow banner in your admin, then you can try disconnecting and reconnecting the checkout-- it can take some time for changes in your PayPal account to fully update, and disconnecting/reconnecting the checkout can prompt that update.

Step 4: Check for Account Limitations

If you’ve gone through all the above and your account still isn’t accepting payments, your PayPal account might have a restriction or limitation.

Since we can’t see your PayPal account status, your best next step is to contact PayPal directly:

  • Log in to PayPal.
  • Click Help in the top right.
  • Use their support tools to get in touch via chat, email, or phone.
