Made by artists, for artists

We believe if you give a motivated and creative person enough freedom they can do amazing things. We believe a group of these people can change the world. We believe a lovingly crafted product can thrive in a world of mass-produced junk.

Work with a passionate group of makers, where the best idea wins. We trust you to do great work and manage your own time.

Work anywhere

We’ve got beautiful offices in downtown Salt Lake City, and can help relocate you. Or, maybe you already love where you live, that’s cool, you can stay right there.

Generous PTO

We encourage you to take about 4 weeks off per year. If you’re sick or something comes up, take the day off. If you’re going on vacation, give us a heads up.

Stay healthy

We’re committed to a solid work–life balance to keep your mind healthy, and medical, dental, life, and vision insurance for the rest.

Family leave

We have your back when life-changing events hit close to home. You can just focus on your personal life, knowing your job and income are secure.

401(k) with match

We’ll help you build your retirement nest egg, for when you’re ready to hang up your mouse.

Funded personal projects

We offer our Employee Art Grant to invest in your creativity. You come up with an idea and we fund it.

Keep learning

We’ll cover any books you’d like to read or conferences you’d like to attend that will help you do your job better.

Face time

Anyone can fly out at any time to meet up with their team on a project, and we bring everyone together a few times per year.

The best tools

Great artists need great tools, and a MacBook Pro (or Air) with a 27" Thunderbolt display should do the job nicely.

Build something

Work with a passionate group of makers, where the best idea wins. We trust you to do great work and manage your own time.

Indie Fest is Big Cartel’s annual company retreat where we relax, get to know each other, and plan for the year ahead. In 2015, the whole team met in Ojai, CA for a week of good times and a little hard work.

Be a part of our team of makers, doers and thinkers who work together to support nearly a million artists.

Engineering Manager

More info

We’re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to join and grow our team. You’ll work alongside our Engineering Director to make our development and ops teams happy, inclusive, productive, and efficient. In doing so, you’ll also be serving a vast community of nearly 1 million artists who depend on our platform every day.

A technical background is essential to be successful in this role, but this is a management position, you won’t be contributing to code - but rather empowering and guiding the engineers that do. The right person for this job should have years of experience managing and growing a strong development team, so that you can:

  • thoughtfully recruit exceptional engineering talent, and help them become a strong part of our team by developing and coordinating on-boarding processes.
  • help shape our internal engineering culture, defining what it means to be a developer at Big Cartel.
  • be a sounding board for your team, providing guidance to the them through 1:1s and daily stand-ups.
  • be a trusted ally to your team, so you can work collaboratively with them to improve processes and documentation, remove roadblocks, and solve problems.
  • understand the personal and career goals of your team and help them achieve them.

This is a full-time and salaried position that includes all of our awesome benefits like paid family leave, solid insurance with domestic partner coverage, 401(k), and a generous PTO policy (we encourage you to take 4 weeks off!). You can work remotely from anywhere in the United States, but if you want to join us in Salt Lake City we can help with that.

We also feel it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry and it really bugs us. That’s why we’re doing everything our small company can do to change that. We hope to continue to build a company whose culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work for artists of all types all over the world.

While we definitely want your sharp skills, we’re specifically looking for a great teammate who values creativity, respect, and an honest desire to support artists over an impeccable resum√©. Please don’t hesitate to apply for any reason. We’re excited to hear from you.
